The UK immigration landscape has undergone a major overhaul following the implementation of a sweeping immigration white paper and subsequent updates. The changes focus heavily on raising skill and language bars, digitizing the application process, and tightening the rules for long-term settlement.

1. Digital Overhaul: eVisas and ETAs

  • Full Transition to eVisas: The UK has effectively phased out physical immigration documents (like paper vignettes and Biometric Residence Permits). Almost all successful applicants now receive a digital eVisa. You must register for a UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) account to view, update, and share your immigration status online.
  • Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA): The ETA is now fully rolled out and mandatory for almost all non-visa national visitors entering the UK for short stays.

2. Stricter Rules for Work Visas (Skilled Workers)

  • Higher Skill Bar: The minimum skill level required for standard Skilled Worker visa sponsorship has been raised to RQF Level 6 (roughly graduate level). Over 100 mid-skill roles (RQF 3–5) have been removed from the eligible sponsorship list unless they fall under specific shortage exemptions.
  • End of Social Care Visa Route: The previous exemption allowing overseas recruitment for social care workers has officially ended. Employers are no longer permitted to recruit foreign care workers under this route.
  • Tougher Employer Compliance: The Home Office has cracked down on payroll compliance. Sponsoring employers must ensure that the salary paid in each individual pay period strictly matches or exceeds the amount stated on the Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS).

3. Raised English Language Requirements

The English language baseline has been raised significantly for several visa categories:

  • Initial Work Applications: Applicants for the Skilled Worker, High Potential Individual, and Scale-up visas must demonstrate a B2 level of English proficiency (equivalent to a UK A-Level), up from the previous B1 requirement.
  • Dependants and Partners: Partners of individuals moving to the UK on work visas are now required to hold a basic level of English to qualify for a dependant visa.

4. Major Long-Term Changes: Settlement and Post-Study Work

  • The 10-Year Settlement Rule (ILR): In a massive policy shift, the standard qualifying period for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) is being extended from 5 years to 10 years for most regular migrants. However, a multi-tier system will apply:
    • High earners (making over £125,140) can fast-track settlement in 3 years.
    • Public sector healthcare workers, teachers, and mid-to-high-level earners (over £50,270) may maintain a 5-year route.
  • Higher English Requirement for ILR: To successfully apply for settlement on or after March 26, 2027, applicants must pass a higher B2 level English test, even if they were originally granted their initial visas under lower language thresholds.
  • Graduate Visa Shortened: For international students graduating with a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree, the standard post-study Graduate visa duration is being cut from 2 years to 18 months (effective for applications from January 1, 2027). PhD graduates retain their 3-year post-study allowance.

5. Security & Asylum Changes: "Visa Brakes"

  • The Visa Brake: To curb asylum pressure, the government introduced a temporary mechanism that automatically refuses Student visa applications from nationals of Afghanistan, Cameroon, Myanmar, and Sudan, as well as Skilled Worker applications from nationals of Afghanistan, if applied for from outside the UK.
  • Refugee Permission Reduced: Lawful permission to stay for those granted refugee or humanitarian protection has been cut from 5 years down to 30 months before renewal is required.

Note: If you already hold a valid UK visa, these changes generally will not retroactively cancel your current leave, but they will impact you when you look to extend your visa, switch routes, or apply for permanent settlement.
