The UK’s Student and Graduate visa routes have seen some of the most significant restrictions in recent history. The government's policies heavily prioritize high-level research and have made it more expensive and legally restrictive for regular international students.  The major changes specifically impacting Student and Graduate visas include:

1. Sharp Restrictions on Bringing Dependants (Family)

  • Taught Master's Ban: International students enrolled in standard taught postgraduate courses (like an MSc or MA) or undergraduate degrees are no longer allowed to bring dependants (partners or children) to the UK.
  • Who is exempt? You can only sponsor dependants if you are enrolled in a PhD, a doctoral program (RQF Level 8), or a specific postgraduate research-based higher degree. Government-sponsored students on courses longer than 6 months are also exempt.

2. Reduced Graduate Visa (Post-Study Work) Duration

  • Cut to 18 Months: For students graduating from a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree, the post-study Graduate visa—which allows you to stay and work in the UK at any skill level without a sponsor—is being slashed from 2 years to 18 months for applications made on or after January 1, 2027.
  • PhD Exception: Doctoral graduates are unaffected by this cut and will still receive a 3-year Graduate visa.

3. Increased Financial Maintenance Requirements

The amount of money you must show in your bank account to prove you can support yourself (for up to 9 months) has increased significantly:

  • Inside London: You must prove you have £1,529 per month (£13,761 total for 9 months).
  • Outside London: You must prove you have £1,171 per month (£10,539 total for 9 months).
  • Note: These funds must still be held in your account for a minimum of 28 consecutive days before applying.

4. Higher Bars for Post-Graduation Work (Skilled Worker)

If you plan to transition from a Student or Graduate visa into a sponsored career in the UK, the path is now much harder:

  • Higher English Requirement: As of January 2026, switching into a Skilled Worker, Scale-up, or High Potential Individual (HPI) visa requires a B2 level of English proficiency (upper-intermediate), up from the previous B1 baseline.
  • The "Visa Brake": Student visa applications submitted from outside the UK are temporarily blocked for nationals of certain countries facing high asylum pressures (specifically Afghanistan, Cameroon, Myanmar, and Sudan).

5. Upcoming Institutional Changes

  • Stricter University Compliance: The Home Office has tightened the screws on universities. Institutions risk losing their visa sponsorship licenses if they fail to report student absenteeism within 10 days, or if their student visa refusal rates spike.
  • International Student Levy (Upcoming): Looking ahead, the government has announced a flat £925 per year levy for every international student, which will be charged directly to educational providers starting in August 2028 (which may impact tuition fees).
